Livestock Drug Program

The Livestock Drug Program regulates over-the-counter livestock drugs. A program Registration Specialist reviews the livestock drugs for safety and efficacy. Particularly, livestock drugs intended for food production animals should be used in a way as not to cause a drug residue in food products derived from these animals. Fees are collected for licensing and registration to fund this program. Veterinarian prescriptions are exempt from registration.

AUS Regulation Status Update

All licensed Restricted Livestock Drug Retailers will receive a copy of the proposed regulations upon publication by the program. Other parties interested may request a copy of the regulations by emailing aus_regulations@cdfa.ca.gov. Once published the regulations will be available at: https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/is/Regulations

IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR LIVESTOCK ANTIBIOTIC SALES:

All Medically Important Antimicrobial Drugs (MIADs) will require a prescription or Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) to be purchased or used in California after January 1, 2018. This change will affect certain MIADs that have been available over the counter (OTC); a list of drugs affected by this change is available here.

For more information about the new requirements for MIADs, please visit the Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship website: https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/AHFSS/AUS/

Please NOTE: The requirements to maintain a Restricted Livestock Drug Retailer license are not changing and drugs such as wormers, hormones, coccidostats, and non-MIAD antibiotics can continue to be sold under your Restricted Livestock Drug Retailer license. A list of drugs are not affected by this change is available here.
