Plant Pest Diagnostics Center - Nematology Laboratory
Examination of processed samples with extracted nematodes in clear water suspension are equally distributed to the nematologists. All common plant parasitic nematodes are identified to the species level using morphological and/or molecular techniques. In cases of detection of high-risk quarantine nematode species (e.g. A, B, and Q rated pest), rare species, and/or species of questionable status, an additional staff nematologists will review the examined species to confirm the identification. A list of certain plant-parasitic nematode species with their ratings and common names can be found here. A laboratory protocol for distinguishing five of the common root-knot nematode species (Meloidogyne arenaria, M. chitwoodi, M. hapla, M. incognita, and M. javanica) in California can be found here.
