AMMP Demonstration Projects
AMMP Demonstration Projects funds two types of projects:
- AMMP Demonstration Projects – New Technologies and Practices will fund projects that demonstrate to a wide audience innovation in the implementation of diverse manure management practices that reduce methane emissions and maximize environmental co-benefits on California dairy and livestock operations.
- AMMP Demonstration Projects – Advancing Practices Farmer-To-Farmer will fund projects that demonstrate through farmer-to-farmer outreach, the manure management practices that reduce methane emissions and maximize environmental co-benefits on California dairy and livestock operations.
Summaries of awarded projects and results are below.
2019 AMMP New Technologies and Practices
CDFA awarded a project titled “Demonstration of an Advanced Manure Management System for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Producing Valuable Products”. This project, led by the University of California, Davis, aimed to demonstrate an integrated manure management system for reducing GHG emissions and converting solid manure into high-value compost products for efficient transportation and application on crop fields. The participating dairy already employed a screen separator to remove coarse solids from flushed manure. Solids were composted during warm weather mostly for use as bedding on the dairy. However, the liquid and solid manure streams still emitted GHG during storage. The project objectives were to technically and economically demonstrate the integration of a centrifuge with screen separator, year-round production of pelletized compost, and to conduct outreach activities to demonstrate the project to dairies and crop farmers. The technical and economic performance of the system would be evaluated using on-farm measurements and modeling tools.
2019 AMMP Advancing Practices Farmer-To-Farmer
CDFA awarded a project titled "Regional Dairy Farmer-to-Farmer AMMP Project Tours and Awareness Outreach". This project, led by the California Dairy Research Foundation, provided information and awareness opportunities to bolster dairy farmer understanding and adoption of AMMP practices, using a combination of videos demonstrating technology, webinars, producer experience interviews, and highlight documents.
