CDFA NOW ACCEPTING NEW MANAGEMENT PRACTICE PROPOSALS FOR ALTERNATIVE MANURE MANAGEMENT AND DAIRY DIGESTER RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TOOLS

Español

SACRAMENTO, August 10, 2023 – CDFA’s Office of Environmental Farming and Innovation (OEFI) is now accepting proposals for innovative manure management practices to be included in its Alternative Manure Management Program (AMMP) and Dairy Digester Research and Development Program (DDRDP) Benefits Calculator Tools

Recognizing the critical role of sustainable farming practices in reducing methane emissions, CDFA has identified specific manure management practices eligible for funding under the AMMP and DDRDP.  These practices include solid-liquid separation, scrape manure collection, and anaerobic digestion of manure.

Beyond this, CDFA is administering a new program, the Dairy Plus Program, to implement advanced manure management practices that will reduce methane emissions as well as nutrient surplus. The program utilizes the AMMP and DDRDP Benefits Calculator Tools to quantify those GHG emissions reductions and is funded by the USDA’s Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities program.

“CDFA has heard from stakeholders and dairy farmers about innovative manure management technologies that might fit in these programs and offer more options for dairy and livestock operators to meet California’s ambitious methane reduction goals,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “CDFA is committed to collaborating with its partners for the continued evolution of these programs.”

Proposed practices must not only address manure collection and treatment but also outline how the management of volatile solids will ensure a permanent reduction in methane emissions while effectively addressing nutrient surplus in dairy and livestock operations.

There are several requirements needed to submit a manure management practice for consideration of inclusion in the AMMP and DDRDP Benefits Calculator Tools. Proposal requirements, the process for consideration, and other details on the submission process can be found on the AMMP, DDRDP, and Dairy Plus Program webpages. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. PT on September 11, 2023, and must be submitted via email to CDFA.OEFI_dairyplus@cdfa.ca.gov.

The 2023 Alternative Manure Management Program is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities.
