MEMORIAL BENCH FOR SLAIN CDFA INVESTIGATOR BILL SHALINE

Dedication ceremony at Capitol Park

SACRAMENTO, July 9, 2001-Those who remember slain CDFA investigator Bill Shaline now have a permanent memorial in his name amidst the spectacular foliage of Capitol Park; a bench financed through donations by friends, family and colleagues.

The memorial bench was dedicated earlier today in a private ceremony attended by many of those friends and presided over by CDFA Secretary William (Bill) J. Lyons, Jr.

“Bill Shaline was a man who made a difference,” said Secretary Lyons. “He had that elusive quality called presence, which drew you in regardless of whether you were on the job with him or knew him on a personal basis. Bill’s many friends here at the Department of Food and Agriculture miss him every day, and our prayers remain with his family.”

Shaline was killed in June of 2000 while on a food safety inspection in San Leandro. Two federal investigators were killed, as well.

The memorial bench is on the south side of Capitol Park, in view of CDFA’s headquarters building, in a grove of palm trees and elms near 13th and N streets.
