Trapping and Detection

McPhail fruit fly trap in an orange tree.
Jackson fruit fly trap in an orange tree.

Fruit fly trappers are working year round in the Los Angeles basin. Trappers place fruit fly traps in host trees and service the trap on a weekly basis. Five Jackson trap and five McPhail traps are deployed per square mile throughout the project area to detect the presence of wild Medflies and to help the project management monitor project activities.

Jackson traps are baited with Trimedlure, which is a synthetic lure used to attract male Medflies. McPhail traps are baited with a yeast attractant and are effective traps to lure female Medflies.
