California currently participates in monitoring and management of the following diseases:
OTHER LIVESTOCK DISEASES
- Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS)
- Rabies
- Bovine Trichomonosis
- Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS)
PRRS is a recently recognized viral disease of pigs that is responsible for significant economic losses throughout the country. Currently, CDFA participates in monitoring for this disease through the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, but no control program has been proposed.
Rabies
Rabies is a viral disease affecting all mammals that is invariably fatal if not treated. Cases are diagnosed in livestock, as well as in dogs, cats, and wildlife. CDFA, along with the California Department of Health Services, monitors cases in livestock.
Bovine Trichomonosis
Bovine trichomonosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Tritrichomonas foetus, is a venereal disease of cattle that causes abortions and an extended breeding season. CDFA is working with the California beef cattle industry and has developed a voluntary control program for this disease.
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
EIA is a viral disease of equids that is sometimes fatal. Other infected equids become life long carriers. CDFA controls EIA by requiring testing (Coggin's test) of equids moving interstate, and isolation or removal of positive animals.
