San Joaquin Valley Drainage Implementation Program (SJVDIP)

The San Joaquin Valley Drainage Implementation Program (SJVDIP) is an interagency program established in 1991 by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between four federal agencies and four State agencies, including the Department of Food and Agriculture. The goal of this partnership is to implement the recommendations published in the 1990 Rainbow Report for management of drainage water in the San Joaquin Valley. The 1990 report recommended a number of in-valley options to manage agricultural drainage and drainage-related problems. The drainage recommendations of the original Rainbow Report were reviewed and later updated by the MOU signatories in the 2000 SJVDIP Final Report. The SJVDIP then developed a new Drainage Management Strategy in 2000 to implement the updated recommendations. The SJVDIP is under the direction of an interagency Management Group, currently chaired by Department of Water Resources (DWR) Deputy Director Jonas Minton. The Management Group is assisted by a Program Coordinator and an Interagency Staff Committee as well as an advisory committee. The SJVDIP Coordinator also coordinates the Proposition 204 Drainage Reuse Program, which provides funding for eligible drainage reuse projects.
