CDFA AWARDS FUNDING FOR 29 PROJECTS PROVIDING SPAY/NEUTER SERVICES TO HELP REDUCE PET OVERPOPULATION

Español

SACRAMENTO, April 20, 2022 - The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has awarded $661,780 for 29 different projects to help stop pet overpopulation through spay/neuter services provided by municipalities and non-profit organizations in California.

Eleven projects have received $477,780 from the Pet Lover’s License Plate Grant Program and 18 projects have received $184,000 from the Prevention of Animal Homeless and Cruelty Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund.

Funded projects include voucher programs, mobile spay/neuter services, a reduction in the number of pit bulls and chihuahuas being sheltered, and a reduction of feral cat colonies.

The Pet Lover’s License Plate Grant Program is funded with proceeds generated through the sale of specialized license plates through the California Department of Motor Vehicles and would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the California Spay and Neuter License Plate Fund, Inc., whose efforts helped establish the Fund.

You can help support the Pet Lover’s License Plate program by purchasing a special interest license plate at your local DMV office or online today.

The animal homeless and cruelty prevention fund is supported by California taxpayer contributions. Taxpayers can designate on their tax return a specific amount in excess of their tax liability, to be transferred to the Fund to provide additional financial resources for the program.

Earlier this year, the state also launched the “California for All Animals” program -- funded with $50 million in one-time state funding ($5 million in FY 20-21 and $45m in FY 21-22) -- to realize California’s long-standing goal that no healthy or treatable animal be euthanized.
