SACRAMENTO, September 2, 2022 – The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will host a 2023 Farm Bill Listening Session in Richmond to hear public comments that will help inform California’s priorities and recommendations concerning federal agricultural and food policies.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. –  11:00 a.m. at Urban Tilth, 323 Brookside Dr., Richmond, CA 94801.

“The farm bill touches all Californians – it is the cornerstone that supports nutritional assistance within communities and furthers a climate smart, resilient and regenerative food system,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “California’s voice on national food and agricultural policies is imperative as the country’s largest producer of a diverse array of crops because of our leadership on innovation, environmental stewardship and commitments to integrate equity throughout our investments in food access and opportunities in farming.”

The Farm Bill provides federal funding nationwide to support a variety of food and agricultural programs including crop insurance, conservation, nutrition and trade; and it ensures a robust farm safety net, promotes farming and ranching practices that are environmentally sound, and provides important nutritional funding for Americans.

Invited speakers include: Doria Robinson, Urban Tilth and board member of the California State Board of Food and Agriculture; Navina Khanna, HEAL Food Alliance; Jared Call, Nourish California and other invited speakers.

“Hosting this listening session in Richmond, underscores the importance of an urban connection to the Farm Bill,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture.  “California has the largest food assistance program in the nation – with more than 4.8 million individuals enrolled.  Hearing from urban communities is critical because the Farm Bill is not just about farming, it is about health and nutrition.”

The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
