CALIFORNIA STATE BOARD OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE TO DISCUSS CLIMATE POLICIES RELATED TO BIODIVERSITY, NATURAL AND WORKING LANDS

SACRAMENTO, July 29, 2022 – The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will hear from state officials from the Natural Resources Agency and the California Air Resources Board on climate policies related to agriculture.  Items for discussion include the Draft Scoping Plan which includes targets for Natural and Working Lands and the 30x30 biodiversity initiative. In addition, the Board will hear from Carbon Mapper regarding the California Satellite Partnership and monitoring efforts for methane emissions.
 
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. –  1:45 p.m. at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, 1220 N Street – Main Auditorium, Sacramento, CA 95814.

“California’s farmers and ranchers have an important role in helping to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions through on-farm practices and conservation efforts,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “Enhancing biodiversity and furthering agricultural sustainability on natural and working lands is uniquely tailored for the state’s agricultural diversity and is a foundation in which California agriculture can continue to lead the nation on climate action.”
 
Invited speakers include: Jennifer Norris, California Natural Resources Agency; Shelby Livingston, California Air Resources Board; Riley Duren, Carbon Mapper; Sara Arsenault, California Farm Bureau Federation; Rachael O’Brien, California Department of Food and Agriculture and other invited speakers.
 
“We cannot discuss climate policies without discussing drought.” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture.  “California agriculture is an integral part of supporting this state’s biodiversity and working landscapes. Without a reliable water supply, California agriculture and our shared climate goals will be impacted.”
 
The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
