STATE BOARD OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE TO DISCUSS CURRENT DROUGHT CONDITIONS, GROUNDWATER TRADING AND WATER RESILIENCE PORTFOLIO AT UPCOMING MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 7, 2021

SACRAMENTO, September 3, 2021 – The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will be discussing current drought conditions and hear updates related to groundwater trading and water storage investments. The Board will also hear updates on plant and animal health issues related to animal welfare and invasive pests. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:45 p.m. via GoToWebinar.

“Ongoing drought conditions are having significant impacts in communities across the state, as demonstrated by the current catastrophic wildfires and water shortages, ” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “All of us must remain prepared for natural disasters and continue to save and conserve our water resources.”
 
Invited speakers include: Erik Ekdahl, State Water Resources Control Board; Laura Jensen, California Water Commission; Nancy Vogel, California Natural Resources Agency; Dr. Annette Jones, CDFA Animal Health and Food Safety Services; Mark McLoughlin, CDFA Plant Health and Pest Prevention Services; Amelia Hicks, CDFA Citrus Pest and Disease Prevention; Teresa Siles, Nuffer, Smith, Tucker Public Relations and other invited speakers. 
 
“As agricultural and rural communities continue to struggle with drought, we need to look forward to better prepare for our water future,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “Investments in water storage, infrastructure improvements and policies must allow for flexibility to maximize water availability to communities, agriculture and the environment. ”
 
The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
