WHY: On June 21, 2000, CDFA meat inspector Bill Shaline and USDA meat inspectors Jean Hillery and Tom Quadros were shot and killed by the proprietor of a San Leandro sausage plant, Stuart Alexander, during a routine inspection. It is believed to be the only time in CDFA’s long history that an employee has been killed in the line of duty. On June 23, 2010, CDFA and USDA employees will gather along with the inspectors’ families to honor the memories of these dedicated public servants.
