STATE AND FEDERAL MEAT INSPECTORS TO BE HONORED IN CEREMONIES MARKING 10 YEARS SINCE THEIR SLAYING



WHAT: CDFA will honor the memories of state and federal meat inspectors slain 10 years ago while inspecting a sausage plant in San Leandro.


WHEN: Wednesday, June 23, 2010, 11 a.m.

            CDFA Director of Animal Health and Food Safety Services Dr.     Annette Whiteford
              CDFA Branch Chief for Meat and Poultry Inspection Dr. Douglas Hepper
              USDA Food Safety and Inspection Services Assistant Director William Smith
              Family members of the meat inspectors


WHY:  On June 21, 2000, CDFA meat inspector Bill Shaline and USDA meat inspectors Jean Hillery and Tom Quadros were shot and killed by the proprietor of a San Leandro sausage plant, Stuart Alexander, during a routine inspection. It is believed to be the only time in CDFA’s long history that an employee has been killed in the line of duty. On June 23, 2010, CDFA and USDA employees will gather along with the inspectors’ families to honor the memories of these dedicated public servants.
