SECRETARY KAWAMURA APPEARS WITH GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER TO APPLAUD HEALTHY EATING PROGRAM AT CENTRAL VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

Multiple changes for healthy lifestyles at Galt High School

SACRAMENTO, August 31, 2006 – CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura appeared today with Governor Schwarzenegger to commend Galt High School for its model program promoting healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. The changes follow the governor’s implementation last year of the Healthy Schools Now Act, which sets nutrition standards for all K-12 public schools.

“Programs like this demonstrate the governor’s passion and commitment to healthy children,” said Secretary Kawamura. “We all know the benefits of exercising regularly and eating right, yet many adults fall short of that in their busy lives. What better way to change that than to introduce these concepts in school, so our young people learn from an early age how to embrace them.”

Galt High School has instituted the Healthy Schools Now Act through a number of measures, including fruit and milk with all lunch entrees, no soda pop or junk food snacks sold on campus, the removal of the deep fryer from the cafeteria, and the adoption of a campus-wide wellness policy.
