BUY CALIFORNIA HEARING SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 31

First step toward creating proposed marketing agreement

SACRAMENTO, August 29, 2001-The highly anticipated “Buy California” marketing agreement will be featured at a hearing Friday, August 31 at the CDFA auditorium, 1220 N St. Sacramento. The scheduled starting time is 10:30 a.m.

“Buy California” was created for in-state promotion of agricultural products. The program, suggested by Governor Davis in June of this year, would begin with $5 million in state funding.

The marketing agreement is modeled after successful programs in New Jersey and Texas. In California, surveys have shown that shoppers are more likely to buy a state-grown product if made aware of that fact. “Buy California” would also encourage people to eat healthier. Research indicates that Californians eat substantially less than the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

NOTE-Media availabilities with CDFA Director of Marketing Services Kelly Krug, California Table Grape Commission President Kathleen Nave and Kern County grower Jim Crettol will begin at 10 a.m.
