Knock Down

The PARC boxes with the young adult Medflies are transported from the incubation trailers to refrigerated trailers. The Medflies are now commingled to provide an even distribution of quality of the flies from all laboratories of origin throughout the project area. The flies are chilled to 38 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 30 minutes in order to put them to "sleep" so that they can be manipulated.

The PARC boxes are passed along a table where the agar is removed and the box is slammed on the table to knock the sleeping flies off of the lid, sides and bags and into the bottom of the box. The paper bags are removed and disposed of and the PARC box is inverted over a collection funnel where the flies fall into a collection tray that is located below the funnel.
