ERADICATION PLANS

Light Brown Apple Moth Eradication Information

The Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM), a serious new insect pest, has been detected in the Oakley area ( MAP/Press Release). This moth feeds on more than 250 varieties of plants and is a threat to California's natural environment as well as our agricultural economy. Emergency eradication and quarantine action is needed to protect California from the negative environmental and economic impacts the establishment of this pest would cause.

To prevent further spread of the pest, beginning in June 2007, a minimum of six ground sprays of an organic formulation of the biological pesticide known as Bt (Bacilllus thuringiensis) will be applied at ten to fourteen day intervals in a small portion of the city of Oakley (MAP/Press Release). Bacillus thuringiensis is a type of bacteria which is not pathogenic to humans, i.e., does not cause illness.

This material is a naturally-occurring biological insecticide that is registered in California and commonly used on organically grown fruits and vegetables. When an insect eats the bacteria or its spores, their digestive processes are disrupted and they soon die. This action is specific to susceptible insects and does not occur in mammals, including humans.

SENSITIVE AREAS

In consultation with the appropriate federal and state agencies, all designated environmentally sensitive locations within and/or adjacent to the eradication area have been identified and will be properly protected. Environmental monitoring will be conducted within the treatment areas to ensure that the applications are properly applied.

ERADICATION PLAN

CDFA has chosen the most environmentally friendly and least toxic products available to eradicate this pest. The proposed eradication area encompasses those portions of Napa County which fall within approximately 200 meters of moth finds in the Napa area (MAP). If additional LBAM are detected outside of the eradication zone, the area will expand as necessary.
