SACRAMENTO, December 14, 2020 – The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will hold discussions with non-profit organizations, agricultural groups and state policy makers concerning the potential for trading markets for on-farm ecosystem services. These are voluntary actions taken by farmers to enhance soil health and the environment. The Board will also hear about the role of innovation and agricultural technology in assisting farmers and ranchers in meeting future production needs.  The meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. via GoToWebinar.

“Providing California’s farmers and ranchers recognition for the voluntary work they are doing on their lands to benefit soil health and water quality through a national market-based system would be a great advancement for the agricultural sector,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross.  “I’m hopeful that market driven opportunities, supported by retail buyers and manufactures, will be a viable possibility in the not too distant future.”
 
Invited speakers include: Debbie Reed, Ecosystem Services Market Consortium; Dave Puglia, Western Growers; Director Kate Gordon, Governor’s Office of Planning and Research and CDFA Secretary Karen Ross.
 
“As we start to close out 2020 – I’m looking forward to the potential of our agricultural sector next year,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “COVID-19 continues to dramatically impact our industry, communities and employees – but I know that we will turn the corner. Looking forward, I believe our discussions on innovation and new technologies will build on a foundation to help growers adapt and continue to be resilient.”
 
The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
