Health requirements for admitting swine into California

A PERMIT from the Animal Health Branch and a CERTIFICATE OF VETERINARY INSPECTION, issued by an accredited veterinarian, showing individual identification, is required for all swine except:

SLAUGHTER SWINE shipped directly to a state or Federally inspected slaughter establishment that have not been shipped with swine destined for other than immediate slaughter. They must reach their final destination (a slaughter establishment) within 24 hours of entering California, must not be removed from that slaughter establishment, and must be slaughtered at that State or Federally inspected plant within 14 days of importation. Compliance with these items will exempt swine from requirements for permits, health certificates and tests. If slaughter swine are transported with non-slaughter swine, they must meet the same requirements as the non-slaughter swine.

Brucellosis

ALL SWINE, including pet swine, must be from a Validated Brucellosis-Free Herd or a Validated Brucellosis-Free Area. If not, a prior 30-day negative test is required for swine over 6 months of age.

Pseudorabies

VACCINATED SWINE are prohibited except by special permit granted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, Animal Health Branch.

BREEDING, FEEDER and PET SWINE that either originate from a Pseudorabies Stage IV or Stage V State, OR have a negative test within 30-days prior to entry and will be isolated from other swine until a 30-60 day retest is completed at destination, will be accepted.

Feeder swine exceptions:

  • A 30-day negative test, but no retest if going into a Designated Swine Feedyard.
  • No test or retest if originating from a Pseudorabies Qualified Negative Herd or Monitored Feeder Pig Herd and going into a Designated Swine Feedyard.
