FARM BILL: Wetland Reserve Program (WRP)
WRP is an existing cropland set-aside program based on permanent and 30-year easements for enhancing wetland wildlife habitat. The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) keeps land in private ownership and on local tax rolls. Under WRP, technical assistance is available from Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to facilitate the creation of wetland habitat. WRP targets poor quality, flood-prone soils. Because of this, and because WRP permits hunting, a WRP agreement can often improve a grower's income as well as the local tax base.
