FARM BILL: Getting the Word Out to California Specialty Crop Producers
California growers have, by and large, not been significant participants in Farm Bill or its conservation programs. This is due to the traditional focus of Farm Bill programs on U.S.D.A commodity crop producers. California is primarily a specialty, not commodity, crop state and, thus, has had limited eligibility to participate in past Farm Bill programs. With the 2002 Farm Bill, California has new opportunities. CDFA has joined with NRCS to get the word out to California's specialty crop growers who may not be familiar with the new opportunities for conservation assistance. A series of grower workshops were held last fall and early this winter. For more information on Farm Bill programs, growers should contact CDFA or their local NRCS or Resource Conservation District offices.
